Area Information

Lewistown's rich cultural heritage began when the Metis, an aboriginal peoples from Canada, in their Red River carts followed the dwindling buffalo herds and settled here in 1879. Open range ranchers, gold miners and homesteaders soon followed. The town became an incorporated city in 1899. The beautiful golden domed Fergus County Court House was erected in 1907.

Between 1905 and 1919, Lewistown experienced a period of rapid growth and prosperity. Prominent businessmen invested in elaborate buildings on Main Street and created mansions for their families within walking distance of their business ventures.

Two railroads provided service to Lewistown; the Milwaukee depot and the Great Northern depot. Immigrants, in search of a better life and free land arrived by the thousands and settled in Central Montana. The railroad also made it possible for local architects and contractors to bring in materials and goods for elaborate building.

Lewistown gets approximately 22 inches of rain and 115 inches of snowfall annually. The number of days with any measurable precipitation is 105. On average, there are 196 sunny days a year. The July high is around 81 degrees and the January low is 4.

Lewistown Public School District is made up of three elementary, a junior high and senior high schools. As an alternative, Central Montana Christian School is available for private educational opportunity.

The region is home to the James Kipp Recreation Area in the C.M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge and the Judith Peak Recreation Area in the Judith Mountains. The area provides great opportunities for other activities such as bowling, hiking, golfing, climbing, hunting, fishing, rafting and canoeing.
